SANTA ANA – A homeless man stabbed a security guard multiple times during a confrontation Tuesday afternoon at a Santa Ana shopping center, police said.

Authorities say the incident began shortly before 1 p.m. when the homeless man approached and bothered a woman in front of a store in the shopping center in the 3700 block of West McFadden Avenue, near Harbor Boulevard.

The woman’s husband confronted the homeless man, at which point a security guard intervened and told the man that he needed to leave the center, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The homeless man left but returned 20 to 30 minutes later, at which point the security guard again confronted him and a fight broke out between the two, Bertagna said.

Investigators believe the homeless man stabbed the guard four or five times in the upper torso, face and neck.

“The security guard said they were fighting over the knife, and the suspect broke free and both cut him and stabbed him,” Bertagna said.

A witness came to the guard’s aid, spraying the homeless man with pepper spray. He fled on foot, Bertagna said, and police have not located him.

The security guard was taken to a hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
